The character Clarinda appears in John Dryden's 'The Indian Emperor' (1665). The name is also featured in early American literature, notably in the poem 'On Being Brought from Africa to America' by Phillis Wheatley, who was owned by the Wheatley family of Boston and supported by Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon.
