Big Bertha, the WWI German howitzer cannon, inspired the nickname for anything impressively large. Disney's 1944 animated feature 'The Three Caballeros' featured a train named Bertha. In the 1970s TV show 'Bertha' on BBC, the title character was a factory machine.
